British Open Underway

The relaunched British Open is underway at The Peak in Stirling. Ice conditions are excellent and a strong local and UK wide field has assembled to compete for the historic trophy in a triple knock-out format.

In first round matchups we saw great curling from the offset and several games going down to the last stone.

In the early session the Welsh team skipped by James Pougher defeated Blair Haswell 8-2; GSCT tour contender Stuart Marshall was beaten 4-7 by local team skipped by Brian Ferguson.; while Callum Kinnear’s team, skipped in this session by Craig Waddell, won out 5-3 in a close game against Andrew McAughtrie.

In the second session, we saw GSCT leaders Cameron Bryce dominate Hannah Fleming, playing without her usual team, winning 12-3. Reid beat Goodfellow 8-4 in the battle of the Michaels and Luke Carson beat John Sharp’s seniors 9-3. Andrew Woolston’s strong English team fought back against Gordon Jackson’s local side but was only marginally heavy with his last stone which left him unable to pinch the two that he needed, Jackson winning 6-5. And finally Lee McCleary fought another close game against Paul Davis, drawing the 4-foot with his last for a two and the narrow victory, McCleary winning 6-5.
